People Incorporated is a nonprofit organization that serves people with mental illness in the Minneapolis and Saint Paul metro area. The Huss Center for Recovery is an innovative treatment program for adult men and women with co-occurring chemical dependency issues and mental illness. The program offers a full spectrum of services including inpatient, intensive outpatient, continuing care and concerned persons group. Our person-centered treatment services provide an integrated, interdisciplinary approach that links psychological, biological, and social factors to assist people in the process of recovery.

We are offering an INTERNSHIP to students enrolled in Alcohol and Drug Counseling Associate's, Bachelor's and Master's degree programs at an MI/CD program. This is an unpaid internship that involves a collaboration between the school, the student and the supervisor at Huss.


The primary objective of the internship is to observe and then practice the twelve core functional skills required of an Alcohol and Drug Counselor. Some experiences will include:

  • Observing Alcohol & Drug Counselors as they provide direct clinical support to clients
  • Working with a diverse population and participating on a multi-disciplinary team that provides individual and group counseling
  • Learning how to prepare reports and documentation for reimbursement of services


Typical schedules occur Sunday – Saturday, 8:00am – 4:30pm or 4:30pm - 10:00pm. Scheduling is flexible and is based upon the needs of the student and availability of site supervisors.


  • Attend New Hire Orientation
  • Respect and follow HIPAA and Vulnerable Adult reporting procedures
  • Attend weekly supervision meetings with academic approved supervisor
  • Incorporate constructive feedback into daily practice
  • Be open to learning about the complexities and stigma associated with mental illness and addiction
  • Be able to identify how certain attitudes, beliefs and values of the practitioner may affect service delivery
  • Attend and participate in group supervision meetings, trainings, and staff meetings


  • Current enrollment in an accredited Associate's, Bachelor's and/or Master's degree program in Alcohol & Drug Counseling
  • Ability to communicate observations, questions, and/or concerns to task supervisor, site supervisor, and field instructor as needed
