We are searching for an Alcohol & Drug Counselor for our Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team.  This team assists long-term homeless adults who have a serious and persistent mental illness. The alcohol and drug counselor is one team member of 14 serving a caseload of approximately 80 clients with serious and persistent mental illness (SPMI) and dual disorders (MI/CD). Each team member has a caseload of approximately 10 primary clients but must be familiar with and available to all clients. The ADC provides direction, education and feedback to peers regarding substance use as it relates to client care. Services provided in the program are in the community and staff are mobile.

The Alcohol & Drug Counselor II (ADC) uses a person-centered approach to support the recovery of people with serious mental and chemical health needs. LADCs counsel and educate individuals, families and the community. Responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and maintaining therapeutic relationships with clients serving as a role model for clients by demonstrating positive,
  • proactive and respectful communications
  • Providing one to one and group support, individualized interventions and crisis management using a client centered approach
  • Implementing a curriculum that addresses the needs of the clients, is based on their treatment plan and is culturally appropriate
  • Conducting comprehensive assessments, treatment plans and discharge plans
  • Supporting the supervisor in providing internship opportunities for students
  • Ensuring individualized treatment strategies and skills development is consistent with client's needs and goals
  • Regularly and actively participate as a member of an inter-disciplinary team providing consultation and client services

Hours for the position are Monday - Friday, for 40 hours starting and ending between 8:00am - 4:30pm (one day a week may be 10:30a-7pm).

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be free of chemical use problems for at least two years immediately preceding hire and must sign a statement attesting to that fact
  • Reliable vehicle, current and valid auto insurance and a clean driving record


  • Associate's degree
  • Holds or is eligible for a current Minnesota ADC temporary permit
  • 2 years of full-time experience working in a Mental Health and/or Chemical Health environment


  • Bachelor's degree in a social services field
  • 1 year of full-time experience working in a Mental Health and/or Chemical Health environment
